They are fun to chase around. the white ones are fast as fucks, the Rhode Islands (or whatever they are called) are easy to catch.

We get an average of 6 eggs per day from our very small operation. Three and a half dozen a week which is enough for a large family.

No roosters, you do not need the cock-a-doodle-do in the morning.

They are easy to care for. I have a coop and a 20'x20' area that with a gate I can open allowing the chickens access to the entire backyard which they seem to enjoy. They are death on insects.

They do not need to be cared for daily so unlike a dog it is possible to get away for a weekend without making contingency plans. If we are gone longer there's a neighbor that we often give a dozen eggs a week to that will happily watch while we are gone.

Personally, I'm a West Coaster and I'm not a big fan of SF anymore. Yes it has its beauties but it's too damned crowded for me. The rat race is just too frantic. The rush hour is already humping at 5:00 AM out in Berkley with the freeway already packed with people frantically trying to get into town and the TV anxiously reporting on the traffic flow buildup as though it were some vital military operation being undertaken which in a sense it is.
