Developing a career and being successful often means carving out a narrow niche where you can demonstrate expertise. Works well until you get bored and then when what do you do? Can't go backwards as it kills your resume, employers see you as burnt out and you can't take less money anyway as your wife and family have you living close to or beyond your means. Your devotion to your career has limited your choices.

Compare to the guy who drifts from one low skilled job to the next in his 20's and 30's. By the time he is in his 40's he's built up a broad range of experience and a network of contacts. He has a wider range of skills and his low cost lifestyle means he can get by on benefits if necessary. He knows the system and doesn't have to put for years with a difficult boss, he simply moves on when the going gets tough. If he feels he's doing better than his peers he'll probably be happy.

If you've got the benefits through being a top dog, once you're no longer strong enough to maintain that position you lose the benefits quickly and find the pack turning on you. The loss of those benefits makes you even weaker, weaker than one who had never enjoyed the benefits, and thus you fall even further and faster.

Being an alpha male is about banging hot chicks, with great drugs/booze, getting a great paying job and having lots of toys.

The thing about that is that it lasts about 5 years.
Then the CC bills hit.
Then it isn't that fun to try to fuck chicks who are in the good range (18-24) because you are the old guy, and they want guys their own age. You are also not able to just fuck off most of the time and study a bit and make the play. Now you have to work your ass off, and still most of the time it is pointless. I know it is a little odd, but when you add it all up, most of the time men get to be in their mid 30s and realize that the last 10 years sucked, and screw it why bother any more.

Now most of them have kids and a wife. The wife hardly puts out anymore, and is way more trouble than she is worth. She rarely works, and if she does she bitches about it (and everything else) non stop.
The kids are fun for a while, but you are so exhausted from work that the 3 hours a night you see them is best made into quite time...
