  9mm or 45acp
.
Unregistered

Looking at the same model of pistol offered in 9mm or 45. Both are about the same price, the 9mm is $10 more for the pistol.

9mm holds 17 rounds
45 holds 12 rounds

9mm ammo is cheaper but ammo costs are not really a concern for me 20 cents a round for 9mm and 30 cents for the 45

Which would you choose?

I have read up on the ballistics tests and a hollow point 9mm has the same power, expansion and destruction as the 45 acp.

the 40 is a decent compromise

9 is easier and cheaper to shoot
45 packs more punch

They are out of the 40 right now. So its between the 45 and 9mm. I keep on reading about the 45 having more punch but all the scientific results say otherwise. Of course if it were ball ammo, the 45 would be a better round. But for civilian use, the 9mm with a hollow point is supposed to be better than a 45 of the same type bullet. 9mm is much faster.

Will you be shooting these bullets out of an AK47 or an M16?

Don't agonize over pistol calibers. They all perform similarly enough where it doesn't really matter given the same shot placement.

That's what I was thinking although having a 45 would be fun.

.45 ACP is the manly choice. But the chances of you having to use this pistol to do anything other than plinking (like defending yourself) are vanishingly small, so it's really just a matter of preference.

9mm - less time reloading

The guy at the gun shop said I should get a 45 because he said I could handle it. He just shook his head when I initially asked about a 9mm. He said I did not want a 9mm and should get a 45. Or a 40.

Yep. That sounds exactly what dipshits at gun stores say.

This guy was about 65 years old. I asked to see a 9mm that was on sale and he crossed his arms and shook his head. Then told me I looked like I could handle a 45 and should get that. Or a 40.

sorry dude but Taurus semi-auto's suck. They have way too many problems, you're better off with a xD(m) or a glock

Why not both. Last time I could not decide that is how I went.

9mm corebonded ammo has more penetration power than any other pistol ammo, and hollowpoints have the same stopping power as the 45.

If you want high stopping power beyond what a 9mm can get than get a 10mm

Different poster, I have had 3 of them, over 25 years of shooting never a problem

The only person he's likely to ever shoot is himself. If he wants stopping power, he should get the .45. If he's looking to defend his house, he'll end up shooting the neighbors when he sprays 9mm rounds through the walls.

Nope, but I am the type to keep the guns I own oiled and monthly run a swab down the barrel and lightly wipe them with clep.

What round 45 or 9mm would be better at shooting through light brush like leaves or bushes?

I guy I know how eats, breathes, and lives guns for self-defense recommends the 9mm over the 45 cal because of the higher capacity of the magazine.

He says, and he speaks from experience, is that you may have to empty the full clip to stop some attackers (e.g. high on PCP).

depending on the gun actually. Some guns run better on certain caliber. For example

But reality is that between the 2, the proper answer is 9mm as ammo is cheaper, so you can practice more. 9mm +p defense rounds are deadly.

if you can't drop someone after 12 shots then its not a gun caliber issue
